Steece Hayes (1/18/2007 10:47:55 AM) - Well I too have many stories, but as the 7 year anniversary of one of them aproaches, I feel inclined to tell it to all who read this.
Mo and I had talked about going to Toronto to meet his family for sometime. We finally scheduled the trip for late January 2000. I had gotten a few days off from work and so had Mo. We were to leave on a Wednesday night after work and drive through the night.
As I sat in my living room waiting on Mo to come pick me up, I watched the Weather Channel. There was a blizzard coming... The weather had been good for the north, until now. As we got on the road around 7 pm, we talked about how we could make it without much trouble.
45 Minutes north of Charlotte, NC we could not see 5 feet in front of us. Blizzard was a good name for this storm. We drove for 24 straight hours. The whole way in blinding snow. At 5:30 pm Thursday we see a Tim Horton's doughnut shop. Mo gets all giddy and tells me that this is the best doughnut in the world. I, of course, tell him he is wrong at Krispy Kreme is the best. We get out of the car and trudge our way in.
After getting our doughnuts and coffee, Mo looks at me and says, "Get ready for a treat.". We both dive in and start eating. After a few minutes I look over and notice Mo not looking as giddy as before. "Dude, these are not better than KK.", I tell him. He looks over and with a hurt expression says, "I swear they were better 20 years ago!" Mo loved him some doughnuts!
We finally made it to his parents house aroun 7 Thursday night. It was -15 F. We put our stuff away and decided to walk a few blocks to get some food. As we walked through the blizzard to downtown Toronto, we pass a cigar shop. We stopped in a bought two Cuban cigars.
We see a British Pub and go inside. The waitress sits us on a deck where we can see the streets and such. The pub was celebrating Robert Bruce week and had lots of Scottish fare. We looked at each other and said that we had made it through a 24 our trip in a blizzard, we can do anything. So we ordered the haggis.
After a few minutes someone next to us says they can see the eclipse. We then remembered there was supposed to be an eclipse taht night. We walked outside onto the patio and looked up and say a Red Moon.
Mo and I always talked about this trip. We drove through a blizzard, ate haggis, drank british beer, saw a red moon and smoked Cuban Cigars. That was just the first day.
Mo, you will always be one of my best friends and as you are fond of saying, " A brother from another mother". |
